How to use the Ojibwe People's Dictionary

ndoozhim nad

my parallel nephew; my stepson

Note:
Someone's sister's son and their brother's son are both called nephew in English but in Anishinaabemowin they are called by different words. A male's brother's son and a female's sister's son are called a parallel nephew; the same term is used for a stepson. There is no simple independent word for this relative. A personal prefix goes with the dependent noun stem /=doozhim-/ nephew (parallel nephew) to make a full word:
  • nindoozhim my nephew (parallel nephew) (1s-3s)
  • gidoozhim your nephew (parallel nephew) (2s-3s)
  • odoozhiman h/ nephew (parallel nephew)
    • [MN] odoozhiman h/ nephew (parallel nephew)/ nephews (parallel nephew) (3s-3')
    • [BL] odoozhiman h/ nephew (parallel nephew) (3s-3's)
    • [BL] odoozhima’ h/ nephews (parallel nephews) (3s-3'p)
The same words are used for someone's stepson. Some basic forms of odoozhiman h/ parallel nephew are:

ndoozhimag ; Stem: /ndoozhim-/
